Review
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is light-hearted, comedic and follows many similarities of the original Guardians movie. There are many “quotable” lines that will get a good laugh. Viewers do not need to see the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie in order to follow the storyline – although, seeing the first would help them put all the pieces together. The Soundtrack is just as fun as the first – I have a feeling many fans owning “Mixed Tape Vol 1” will soon own “Mixed Tape Vol 2.”
The storyline is slightly discouraging. Personally, I don’t like the fact that Rocket steals from a nation whom they were trying to help, which in turn results in a chain of events from which they have to save themselves. Rocket is perceived simultaneously as a lying thieve and a hero… Not the message we want to send to kids. But then again, without Rocket’s theft… the entire movie plot would not exist.
Overall, I enjoyed it… and I know it will appeal to Marvel fans and adults who want to be entertained. I do not believe it is right for children, which brings me to…
The Kid Factor
As mentioned above, Rocket’s role/message isn’t the greatest. Yet, he’s one of the main characters that are going to appeal to kids; He’s a cute little raccoon with attitude. But, he’s got quite the potty mouth (I believe curse words are used close to 40 times from all characters), which kids are likely going to try and repeat. The movie makes light of death – especially during the scene where Yondu brutally kills nearly 50 men who betrayed him… somehow, this is made to seem comical, yet when another character dies (I won’t spoil it here) – his death is mourned, even though he was pretty much an “equal” to the 50 that were killed. The movie is rated PG-13 for a reason. I’d suggest kids under 12 not see this unless they are mature enough to discern what words not to repeat and that murder should not be taken lightly.
Stay through the Credits?
Yes! In fact, WATCH the credits… there are fun “I Am Groot” easter eggs that change into actual names. There are also several mini-scenes, including Teenage Groot, thrown in between the credits. It’s all very entertaining and worth your time to stay.
