Movie Review: Solo ~ A Star Wars Story

Star Wars fans are likely to be pleased with Solo! Released today, May 25th, it’s an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo befriends his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and meets the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.

The film stars Alden Ehrenreich, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Paul Bettany.

Review

I had the privilege of seeing an advanced screening Solo: A Star Wars Story and very much enjoyed it! I believe all Star Wars fans will be pleased. We learn how Han Solo got his name, how he met Chewbacca, and how he obtained the Millenium Falcon. It’s all-in-all a good film and most of the family will enjoy it.

True to Star Wars fashion, this film contains your typical humor and banter between Han and Chewy, as well as some other fun zingers between other characters. You’ve got other creature characters that bring interest to the film. There are a few stormtroopers shown in the beginning, but they are not the focal point. And ‘The Force’ is never mentioned. We are left hanging at the end, as Qi’ra is shown leaving – but we don’t know where she’s going or if she’s coming back. This may be hinting at yet, another, Star Wars story film in the future.

The Kid Factor

While most families will enjoy it, younger kids may find the blaster fights frightening, or they might get bored at times. There are a few slow stretches, therefore younger kids may have a harder time sitting through the 2-hour film. There are a few curse words said, such as “hell,” “damn,” and “crap,” but they are very infrequent. I believe all teens and adults can handle this movie, but parents should make a judgement call for their own children. For an even better gauge on whether or not your child should view this film, I recommend parents read Focus on the Family’s Review of Solo.
