Has it really been 20 years?! Why, yes it has. Way to make me feel old, Disney. I was 14 when the Lion King was released. It was literally all the rage! (Think Frozen hype.) Now, Disney has released The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar – the story of Simba’s son… Simba has kids? Oh wait… so do I… again, feeling old. Anyway, kids AND parents will enjoy this new release, as it brings back old favorites – Timon (Kevin Schon), Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella), and Rafiki (Khary Payton) along with the new cast of characters.
Kion is just like his father, Simba – determined, yet stubborn, but bearing the responsibility to protect the Pridelands. As the story unfolds, Kion learns new things about himself along with the help of his friends – Beshte, Bunga, Ono and Fuli. Children will enjoy the humorous antics of Kion’s friends, and adults will enjoy the many references back to the original Lion King tale.
In addition to the movie, The Lion Guard tv series has recently been released on Disney Jr. The daily shows exhibit your child’s favorite Lion Guard characters for a fun, entertaining time. Just about every episode displays environmental issues and the idea of conservation – which can be turned into an educational lesson/discussion, if parents desire. (Speaking of education, kids of all ages can participate in The Lion Guard Adventure at Disney’s Animal Kingdom!)
