At Walt Disney World, there are thousands of people moving all around, which means lots of people touching handrails, door knobs, and other surfaces… which means millions of germs being spread! With any trip to Disney, no matter the season, it is highly critical that you wash your hands!!
While colds and flu can be airborne, there are some viruses spread by simple ingestion. This occurs most often because someone touches a contaminated surface, then proceeds to eat food or stick their hands in their mouth without washing their hands prior. Let’s take the stomach flu, for example. According to www.stopthestomachflu.com, a recently ill person is still shedding the virus up to 10 days after their symptoms have stopped. If they do not wash their hands thoroughly after they use the restroom, everything they touch can become contaminated with that virus. If you handle an object that a recently sick person has touched, such as a pen, then proceed to eat a snack… that virus moved from the pen, to your hand, to the sandwich you’re eating and into your digestive system. Within 48 hours, you’re vomiting. Stomach bug viruses can live on surfaces for 14+ days! Now, say the recently ill person thoroughly washed their hands… hopefully no traces of virus could be left behind on items that they touched. Or, had you washed your own hands before eating (yes, even before eating a snack), you would have washed the virus off your hands and not ingested it.
Hand washing is critically important! Especially in crowded places like Disney World. No one wants to get sick on their magical vacation.
