Recycled Beads from Epcot’s Outpost

Nestled along World Showcase is the Village Traders, an African theme area with a variety of African gifts. I have always walked right past this area, but decided to stop by on my most recent Walt Disney World vacation. I had no idea about the wonderful treasures that you can find in the African Outpost.

Here you’ll find the Bead Outpost, a kiosk with beaded earrings, necklaces and bracelets. At first they just seem to be fun and bright African jewelry, but if you focus on the sign in the kiosk, you’ll see that they are so much more! The beads are all made from old Disney maps and paper products. The papers are sent to Africa where they are rolled by hand into one of a kind beads. This wonderful program gives jobs and job training to women in Africa.

They booth has samples of the different beads and shows how they are all handmade with tiny pieces of paper. You can even see words and graphics on some of the beads.

I love that you can wear this fun jewelry and feel like you have a piece of Disney magic with you at all times. And they are certainly more subtle than Mickey Mouse earrings! Have you stopped by the African Outpost at Epcot?
