$50 Disney Gift Card Giveaway!! Enter here!

This week, we're happy to have Melanie Brown - an agent with Magic of Mickey Travelan Authorized Disney Vacation Planner - sponsor a $50 Disney Gift Card Giveaway!!

Melanie's love for Disney began at age 5 when her mother took her to Walt Disney World. She also had a cousin who loved Mickey, so the Disney influence ran in the family. Her love for Mickey didn't end with childhood; on her wedding day, Melanie and her husband toasted with Mickey & Minnie glasses and they even had a Mickey & Minnie cake topper!

Melanie has been with Magic of Mickey travel for over two and half years. She certainly loves to spread the magic and help others plan their dream vacations. Her services are completely free! Contact Melanie today for a no obligation quote.

**Booking Bonus** Mention 'WDW Hints' to Melanie when booking a Disney Vacation Package and receive a $25 Disney Gift Card! Book by 12/31/13 - for travel anytime in 2013 or 2014. Gift Card will be sent 2 weeks prior to your travel dates.

A few of Melanie's WDW favorites include:
  • Resort: Polynesian
  • Character: Mickey Mouse
  • Rides: Soarin, Tower of Terror, and Rockin Rollercoaster
  • Restaurant: O'hana
  • Favorite Snack: Dole Whip. Only available at The Polynesian and Magic Kingdom.
  • Favorite free things to do: View the fireworks. There are no fireworks that are more beautiful. Watch the parades.
  • Helpful hint: Always enter the Parks at opening and go left. The majority of people go to the right and if you go in and go left and start at the back of the Park you can do lots of things before the crowd makes it around to where you started.
Who's ready to WIN a $50 Disney Gift Card?!?!? Enter through the Rafflecopter form below. This contest begins Sunday, Sept 1, 2013 at 12:01 a.m. and ends Saturday, Sept 7 at 11:59 p.m. (eastern.) The winner will be notified via email within 48 hours of the contest ending. This contest is open to residents of the United States of America AND Canada! Good luck!

App Review: Mousetrips

I recently had a chance to test out a great new app called MouseTrips, which was designed to keep Disney vacation planning madness down to a minimum. And we all know that keeping track of Disney vacation plans can be maddening.

Let's start at the beginning with some of the features offered by Mousetrips. It allows you to:
  • Keep track of your travel and trasporation plans, hotel information, dining and entertainment plans
  • Save photos of passes and PhotoPasses
  • Export plans to your iphone calendar
  • Create a countdown to your trip and a dining countown that counts down to the 180 day mark.
  • Track dining points for the Disney World dining plan.
The app can keep track of trips to Disneyland, Walt Disney World, DisneyVero Beach, Hilton Head and Disney Cruise vacations.

The home page is simple and easy to navigate. I began by going to the "Add Trips" option and chose my destination (Walt Disney World), and my travel dates. You can then "Add Plans" to your trip. I added my resorts (again, easy to find through their navigation) and then began adding dining reservations. You choose your restaurant, add a time and you can also store your confirmation numbers. I chose not to add flight or rental car information, but it would have been simple to add.

My favorite feature is the vacation countdown. It shows in the app, but also on the app's icon. I love turning on my phone and seeing how many days before our next trip!
(I wish my Disney trip was always this close)

I was very impressed with the Mousetrips app. I think it will be really great while we are at Disney for quick references about all of our dining and entertainment reservations. I highly recommend checking out this app before your next trip.

Happy planning!
Amy

D23 Expo Part Two: "The Art of Frozen" Panel

At ten thirty in the morning, about one hundred fans of animation piled into the Stage 23 conference room to get a sneak peak at the new Disney movie, Frozen, in the "Art of Frozen" panel. Michael Giaimo, the art director of Frozen (and Pocahontas!), treated us to a special explanation of how the film came to look the way it does and where the team got their inspiration. We were shown photos of the creative team trekking through Norway, boating through the fjords, and wearing dresses in the snow. Giaimo explained at length how the aesthetics of Frozen were largely inspired by Norway--The stave churches inspired the architecture, and the fjords inspired the environments.

After his passionate speech, Giaimo finally showed us four never-before-seen clips from the movie; the clips in which Anna meets a prince, in which Anna meets a snowman (Olaf!), in which Sven is serenaded by Christophe, and one in which Elsa loses her cool (pun intended. You will get it when you see the movie. Then you will laugh. I hope.)

In addition to seeing the exclusive clips, we were also given a peek at behind-the-scenes processes. 3D animators will often create test clips of various characters in the early stages of animation, usually doing something simple, like walking, sometimes with a flourish of personality. This gives the animators an idea of how to go about portraying the characters' personality while at the same time making it look natural. Attendees to this panel were given the opportunity to see these practice clips for the four main characters of Frozen: Anna, Elsa, Christophe, and Hans. Being able to see the early stages of these characters' development was extremely neat-- it made me feel very much on the down-low!

Attendees to the "Art of Frozen" panel were shown the various stages of development for Anna's and Elsa's physical appearance-- it was striking to see how much Elsa's final look has changed from her original concept. Elsa started with very short hair and a much different face and wardrobe, but she now has long hair, a lovely face and beautiful
shimmering gowns.

Frozen hits theaters this November, and the D23 Expo has turned me into a fan of it already! I'm sure you can tell who will be first in line for this new Disney Animation Studios movie come Thanksgiving-time!

We Love Disney Gift Cards... try to WIN one ($50 Up for Grabs!!)

Anyone can find a use for a $50 Disney Gift Card! This week, Melissa Bretzius - a Disney Vacation Planner with Mickey Adventures - is giving away a $50 Disney Gift Card to one of our lucky readers!
Melissa lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan with her husband and 3 children. They all share a love for Disney and they're annual passholders as well as Disney Vacation Club members. Melissa certainly enjoys the planning process, not just for her family's vacations, but for others as well! Her specialties include helping first-timers, families (including babies through teens), and extended family vacations. As your Disney Vacation Planner, Melissa will be eager to answer your questions, provide you with helpful suggestions and will always be on the look out for ways to save you money! Best of all, Melissa's services are completely free! What does that mean? Well... you could either book through Disney and figure things out for yourself, or you could book with Melissa and hear her suggestions, get Disney tips & more, and still pay the exact same price (or maybe less if she finds a better deal for you.)

Here are several of Melissa's Disney World favorites:
  • Resort: Definitely Beach Club! Smaller resort, great location and THE best pool!
  • Restaurant: Biergarten in Germany (Epcot) My family loves German food and we love to watch (and dance!) to the lively band that plays when we dine!
  • Snack: A pineapple Dole Whip from Aloha Isle in Adventureland, Magic Kingdom
  • Character: Love love love Minnie (and all the adorable interactions she's had with my children throughout the years!)
  • Attraction: Soarin at Epcot ~ Most relaxing ride ever. Also love the Tomorrowland Transit Authority in the MK. Toy Story Mania in HS. Animal Kingdom... Love the shows! Lion King, Nemo and Flights of Wonder.
  • Free thing to do: In the parks... sample soda's from around the world at Club Cool (Epcot). Out of the parks... visit one (or more) of the Deluxe resorts. They really are amazing!
  • Fun hint or tip: My biggest tip is to always arrive to the parks early. After that, it’s don't rush. Enjoy all the little things and the little details that are everywhere in Disney.
  • Extra advice: You won’t be able to do everything in one trip (or even 10 trips!) but enjoy all the moments you’re there with your family.
**Booking Bonus** For any Disney Cruise or 4+ night Disney Vacation Package booked through Melissa, you'll receive a $50 Disney Gift Card! (Gift card will be sent 2 weeks prior to your check-in date). Offer is valid for any vacation booked in 2013 (for travel in 2013 or 2014).

Who's ready to WIN a $50 Disney Gift Card? You may enter using the Rafflecopter form below. This contest begins at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, August 25, 2013 and ends at 11:59 p.m. (eastern) Saturday, August 31st. Contest is open to all residents of the USA. Good luck!

Getting Started with MyMagic+

More and more future Disney Resort guests are gaining access to MyMagic+. Whether it's through the testing phase, or the official start of MyMagic+ for your resort, you may have been given the news that you'll be using Magic Bands from either your travel agent, or from Disney themselves. (If you booked with a travel agent, you'll likely to hear from them first.) Here's a quick walk through of what to do once you've received the news that you're eligible to use My Magic+. Head to www.startyourdisneyexperience.com, then Sign in or Register and let's get started!

Customize Your Bands & Verify Shipping Address
Once you have logged in, the first thing you should do is link your reservation so that it appears in 'My Disney Experience.' Do the same and link your tickets. If these 2 steps have previously been done, go straight to 'Personalize Magic Bands.' Choose a color for each member of your party, and enter in the name that they prefer to be called. This is a nice feature because if you've got a "Michael" listed on your reservation, but he goes by "Mike," you can enter his nick-name on the Magic Band. Here, you will also verify your shipping address. If you do not submit an address (or there is not enough time to ship the bands to you), your Magic Bands will be waiting for you at the Resort check-in desk.

Make Your FastPass+ Selections
Next, click on "Make Fast Pass+ Selections." Choose the day that you'd like to make selections for - we've chosen Wednesday, Sept. 25 in our example below (You'll see that we've already made selections for Tuesday, the day before.) Click "next."

Now choose the park you'd like to visit on that day, then hit "next." It will ask you to select your party members for FastPass+ choices, in most cases you'll want to "Select All" - but there may be a particular ride that just 2 of you want to enjoy while the rest of your party goes elsewhere. You'll now be asked to select 3 Attraction/Entertainment options from the list that you'd like to experience. In the example below, you'll see that we chose Test Track, Soarin, and Meet Disney Pals. If you're unsure of what to pick, you can select the button call "FastPicks" - this option will select attractions for you. This option was likely created to help to first-time visitors, but if you're familiar with WDW, choose the attractions you know you want to see!

The next screen will give you 4 options of arrival time groupings titled "Best Match," "Option A," "Option B" and "Option C." The options are grouped based on morning, afternoon or evening hours. You may choose which grouping of pre-selected time frames best fit your preferences. We went with the "Best Match" option as the times seemed to be closest together (less wait time in between arrival times.) You will have the option later on to adjust FP+ return times if you aren't satisfied with them.

Adjusting a FP+ Time Frame
Finally, you'll see a confirmation screen with your selected attractions. You are then given the option to adjust one or more of your FP+ times. For example, in the screen shot below, you'll see we've got Test Track scheduled for 12:10 PM, however, if we had a lunch reservation at 12:15 - we wouldn't make it to Test Track! There is an option to change the return time to adjust for scheduling conflicts. You'll see our available time options below... to be on the safe side in this scenario, we'd choose a time after 2:00 PM. Next, you can plan another day, or log out. You can always return later, and change your FastPass+ selections or time frames if you prefer.

HINT: You are allotted 3 choices per day for FP+, but sometimes you'll receive a *bonus* Fast Pass+ selection that Disney throws in - you can't select it, the bonus FP+ just appears as a 4th selection. Enjoy!

Room Only Reservations & Magic BandsEven guests with just a room-only reservation are being chosen to test out Magic Bands. Their magic bands will serve as a Room Key and their Magical Express 'ticket.' At this point in time, guests with a room-only reservation are allowed to make FP+ selections for 30 days following their check-in date - this will be a beneficial feature to those of you doing a split-stay starting on-property then moving off-property.

Room + Ticket Reservations & Magic Bands
Guests who purchased a Disney Vacation Package will use their Magic Bands as their park ticket for admission into the parks, and their tickets will be added allowing them to select their FP+'s for the amount of days they purchased. Just like those with a Room-only Reservation, their magic bands will also work as a room key, and magical express ticket.

Troubleshooting
Are there kinks to be worked out? Yes! I received an "Oops, Try Again Later" message a few times. I was also taken back to the initial 'home' screen after pressing "next" while in the process of selecting FP+ options. I was even shown that I could choose Be Our Guest for a lunch FP, when choosing that, I was taken to the home screen again... and couldn't find the Be Our Guest lunch option again. As always, for questions regarding MyMagic+, you can call (407) 939-7849.

Opting Out
If you do not wish to participate in the trial-phase of MyMagic+, you can simply turn in your Magic Bands during check-in and request the standard Key to the World cards.

We'll do our best to keep you informed of new changes to MyMagic+, but we hope you found this initial tutorial helpful.

D23 Expo Part One: Arrival, Frozen, and the 'Animation' App

The excitement surrounding the Anaheim Convention Center is palpable as I pull into the parking structure across the street at seven thirty in the morning. People of all ages don their favorite Disney swag as they happily make their way to the Convention Center. Walking through the structure I see that I am in the midst of the TRUE Disney fans-- Bumper stickers, antennae toppers, even wheel hub covers, are all sporting mouse ears, and I suddenly feel little out of place, wearing a simple non-Disney tee shirt driving my naked, non-Disney-fied Honda Civic. Immediately wishing I had brought along my trusty mouse ears, I bring my caffeinated self over to Will Call to pick up my ticket. Along the way, I see hundreds and hundreds of people waiting in line to get into the Convention Center. The people towards the front of the various lines even have sleeping bags and pillows with them. I find my respective line at about eight, and manage to get into the Expo by about nine thirty.
Upon entering the Expo itself, I am overwhelmed by the visual stimulation. There are many large displays and flashy decorations everywhere, accompanied by hugely ecstatic Disney cast members. I end up spending quite a bit of time at the "Frozen" booth due to its amazing displays and demonstrations. The new iPad application, "Animated," is demonstrated by a passionate developer who explains the ins and outs of the app to a few of the interested attendees.

The app is essentially a book about animation, detailing the ins and outs of various animation principals and "rules". Examples of each principal are given on each page of the "book" through actual clips of Disney movies. In addition to this, the application offers a timeline of all the animated Disney movies ever made, and information about each movie. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of this app is the "color map" feature. Here is an example of a color map:

The colored vertical lines are actually the color that is the "average frame color" for every single frame in a given movie. The enlarged strip you see above is the color map for the entire Aladdin movie. "Animated" boasts a full color map for every single animated Disney movie ever made, from Sleeping Beauty to Wreck-it-Ralph. The screen you see above is actually all the color maps put together on one page. The user is capable of scrolling through every single frame of every single movie on this page of color maps. When you look at the screen above and see every color map of every movie, you are looking at over one million hours of work from various animators.

Various Disney Animation Studios projects were also on display at the Frozen booth, like art from the "Paper Man" short, and various drawings of favorite characters like Wreck-it-Ralph, Vanellope Von Schweet, and even Olaf, the snowman from Frozen.

The Frozen booth was an amazing part of the Expo, but definitely not the biggest highlight. Be sure to check out the rest of my D23 Expo mini series to learn more about the Expo!

App Review: Character Locator created by Kenny the Pirate

Excellent, excellent, excellent stuff! Kenny, and his brother Bobby, created the Character Locator App originally for locating characters only. But once they began redesigning the app, they realized they had the capacity to add so much more - which is why the app now includes Park Hours, Shows, Rides and Dining. In reviewing this app, we found it contains invaluable information - certainly worth much more than the $2.19 it's currently priced at! Here's what I discovered when testing out Kenny's app...

Character Locator - You may search for Characters in each park by Name (listed alphabetically), by Land, or by Time of Day that they're appearing. While some of the Character locations and greeting times can be found on a Times Guide, the latter two options within the app will help you find Characters more quickly while you're in the parks as the Times Guide will often list "intermittently" instead of an actual schedule for certain Characters - Character Locator has every available character listed, and the actual time frames when you can visit them! Who's nearby in the Animation Courtyard at Disney's Hollywood Studios? Jake is! Click on "Jake" and find out which hours he's making appearances. When you click on a Character, you'll see options for their current schedule, Tips (for interacting), "I Met" and List. Click the "I Met!" box to check off each character that you met, and make notes if something fun happened - great for memories. Look at your "List" of Characters that you've already met if you want to keep track of who's next to find!

Park Hours - Pretty straight forward. Park hours are listed for each park, including extra magic hours (morning & evening specified), for the next 6 months.

Shows - Organized just like Characters, you may find shows based on Name (alphabetical order), Location or Time of Day. Just like when clicking on a Character, when you click on a show you'll see the options for Schedule, Tips, "I Saw!" and List. The Tips section is always helpful - based on the particular show you're looking up you can figure out if early arrival is necessary or not, if audience participation is allowed, learn fun facts and more!

Rides - Organized with the same categories, except with "I Rode!" in place of I Met/I Saw. As always, you can make comments about each individual ride you tried in the "I Rode" section, and keep track of which rides you completed in the List category. The feature to watch here though is in "Schedule." Posted are the current wait times for each ride, and also the return Fast Pass time should you want to obtain a fast pass right now.

Dining - Hold onto your seats!! This is the feature all of you foodies will LOVE! Dining has the sub-categories of "Cart," "Counter," "Table," and "All by Location." Yep - you can find a snack just by looking at "Carts." When you see a list of all the snack carts, click on one and the full menu will appear - complete with pricing AND if each particular snack is included on the Disney Dining Plan or not! For those of you planning out your meals down to your snacks... looking at these menus will allow you to figure out which snack to choose in order to get the biggest bang for your buck (or credit)! The Counter and Table sub-categories also give menus, pricing and the "I Ate!" option to make notes of what you ate... for the memories of course!

Special Events - Attending Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party, Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, or Star Wars weekends? Kenny and Bobby have got your Characters, Shows and Rides detailed for those events too!

Character Dining - There are several Character Meals found outside of the parks at certain Disney Resorts. Find out where to eat to meet your favorite Character!

Rare Characters - Looking for those hard-to-find Characters? Kenny has a complete list of Characters (alphabetized) and where to find them. Looking for Dopey? You can only find him at MNSSHP or MVMCP - this information can be found in the "Tips" section for each character.

All in all, this is an excellent app to carry with you through the Parks. It makes a great planning tool too before your trip - especially for those of you making Dining plans! My only question for Kenny was "Where's the Dining info for outside of the parks - such as non-character Resort restaurants and Downtown Disney?" Kenny says those restaurants are in the works to be added soon! After they complete Dining, Kenny and Bobby plan on adding Touring Plans for those who want to tackle Characters and Rides. Character Locator should work on any device with either a cell or wifi connection. It has been noted that it's very fast in the parks too... and for $2.19 you won't be let down. Give it a try and let us know what you think! You can try a 'lite' version of it for free right now at www.characterlocator.com.

Happy Hunting!

Movie Review: Disney's Planes

From the World of Cars, comes Disney's PLANES and right off the bat you feel as though you're flying when watching Disney's PLANES in 3D at the theater! Thanks to the generosity of Disney, my family and I had the privilege of pre-screening Planes on Monday, August 5th. Now that PLANES is officially playing in theaters (opened today - Aug 9th!), I can tell you about it... but I'll try not to spoil it!

For me, PLANES wasn't as good as Cars - but I pretty much expected that was going to be the case. Don't get me wrong though, I was certainly entertained by the movie! (For me, nothing can beat the first of its kind.) Planes was funny, it was cute, and my 5 year old daughter was asking to see it again just 5 minutes after the movie had ended! So, no doubt - your kids will love it... boys AND girls alike.

Dusty Crophopper wants to be a high flying air racer, but he wasn't built for that. As a crop duster, he flies low and slow. Through the encouragement of his friends and skilled training, he qualifies for a World Touring Race. The plot was your typical "Let's Race" type of scenario. There's a race, there's a couple of characters trying to sabotage Dusty, but as with any Disney story, there's always a happy ending as the underdog pulls through. The moral of the story being with hard work you can achieve more than what you were built to accomplish.

Parents will get a kick out of some of the lines within the movie. The PG rating was likely set due to those adult-humored lines, but don't let that deter you from taking your children to see Planes... the jokes will fly right over their heads. Yep, pun intended.

I certainly recommend anyone of any age seeing PLANES, as there's something entertaining for everyone within this move. Check out the trailer here:

Happy flying!

WIN these Fun Items from Coco and Gigi's Boutique!!

Our Summer of Giveaways continues and this week we're featuring Coco and Gigi's Boutique! Ambria is the owner and creator of all the items you see showcased here. Up for grabs this week is a girls necklace, hair bow and a boys t-shirt (your choice of size - 12 month - 5T) pictured below!!

Ambria got started in crafting these items when she had her daughter 5 years ago and wanted to make baby bracelets for her daughter when she was 3 months old. She also made and sold tutu's. The summer her daughter turned one, Ambria learned how to sew and that's when she decided to make appliqués. She makes shirts for her daughter for all of the major holidays.

You can check out all of Ambria's items at her Etsy shop. All items are made by Ambria - usually when her daughters are napping or have gone to bed. Her most popular items are the girls chunky necklaces.

Ambria has always been in LOVE with Disney. They went on a big vacation in January to Disney World and that's what got her making Disney Themed Items. She loves creating items for peoples Disney Vacations.  Whenever Ambria finds a new fabric she likes or thinks of a new necklace design that's Disney themed she gets pretty excited!

Ambria's favorite Disney movies include: Robin Hood, Alice in Wonderland, Lady and the Tramp, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, The Emperor's New Groove, Tangled, and Wreck It Ralph. Her favorite Disney rides are: Pirates of the Caribbean, The Matterhorn, Toy Story Midway Mania, Big Thunder Mountain, Indiana Jones, The Haunted Mansion and many more. Topping her list of favorite Characters are Minnie and Mickey Mouse. She admits to liking the characters more than her girls do (but many of us are guilty of that!) When her daughter was 2, Ambria made her family wait 3 different times to see princesses to make sure they saw different ones. They were especially happy to meet Minnie Mouse dressed as a Princess. :)

**Ordering Special!!**  Ambria will be adding new Disney-themed items all week long. Receive 10% off any order of $10 or more with the code WDWHINTS10 (expires Monday, August 12th at midnight.)

Are you ready to enter for a chance to win some of Ambria's super cute items? Enter using the Rafflecopter form below. This contest begins at 12:01 a.m. (eastern) Sunday, August 4th and ends at 11:59 p.m. Saturday, August 10th. Open to US residents only.
