There are attractions at Disney World and areas of Walt Disney World that I have not seen in years. It’s not that I haven’t been to Disney, it’s just those silly kids of mine. Trips to Walt Disney World are dramatically different when you travel with children who simply have no interest in visiting every nook and cranny in World Showcase. So, what am I missing on my trips? Here are my top 10 Disney attractions and activities that are great for adults (and that I’d love to try myself again someday):
1.World Showcase – When I used to visit World Showcase at Epcot, I would wander through each country looking at all the decor and visiting all of the shops. It’s such a nice way to spend an afternoon or evening.
2. Epcot Food and Wine – I’ll admit it – Food and Wine makes me crazy. My kids have no interest in trying foods from around the world. (I’m lucky enough to get them to eat mac and cheese.) For me, a parent with small kids, the festival is just an event that fills up Epcot with massive crowds. That being said, I’m secretly just jealous of all the people there enjoying all the food and drink options. It’s a great “no kid” kind of evening.
3. Shopping – My kids have no patience for shopping. I’d love to take my time looking at shops throughout the parks.
4. Downtown Disney – Downtown Disney offers wonderful shopping, restaurants and nightlife that are great for a kid-free afternoon and evening.
5. Late nights and early mornings – Without the ability to go to Disney any time we please, we like to cram as much as we can into our trips. With kids, we have to monitor how late we are out at night and make sure everyone gets a break during the day. Without the kids, we can run ourselves ragged with early mornings and late nights.
6. Fine dining– We all know there are amazing restaurants at Walt Disney World. When traveling with the kids, there are restaurants that I know are just not an option. If we travel without them we can enjoy a leisurely dinner at any of the tops Disney restaurants.
7. Easy traveling – Strollers, diapers, wipes… the list goes on and on of all the extras you need to pack and carry for kids. Without them, you won’t have to fight to get the stroller folded as the buses arrive to have to carry items for an entire crew of people. And, maybe you can get away without a bag in the parks!
8. Thrill Rides or “scary” attractions – While we don’t step foot near Splash Mountain or the Tower of Terror (we’re all chicken in this family), going without kids who are too short or too scared to ride would give non-chicken adults a chance to check out all of the thrill rides. Going without the kids also gives you the chance to go to attractions that may scare the kids are that you may feel are not age appropriate for young children. We have not seen the American Adventure show for years. I’m not sure the Civil War scenes are right for the kids just yet.
9. Special tours – Head backstage for a Behind the Scenes Tour at Disney! I can’t wait to take my family on a behind the scenes tour to see some of the sights I enjoyed while on the Walt Disney World College Program. But, these tours are not for young kids, so they will have to wait til they are older, or until we hit Disney without them…
10. Romance – Yes, a trip to Disney World can be wonderfully romantic! Take a stroll through Epcot and have a candlelit dinner in France. What could be better? (And you can’t do that with the kids!)
11. Not sure You want to be completely without the kids? Then bring them to Disney and drop them off at one of our Y.E.S. classes scheduled for Sept. 12, 13 & 14th (2016). They’ll enjoy learning with a Disney Facilitator, while you and your spouse can enjoy the parks for 3 hours on your own! Of course I love traveling to Disney with my children. They look forward to the trip all year. But, it’s certainly nice to reminisce about past trips and daydream about an adult only trip to Walt Disney World. What is your favorite child-free Disney activity?
